I’m strangely saddened by the news that Apple Computer has changed its name to just Apple Inc. I grew up with Apple Computer, and have always been fond of the company. As a kid, their computers inspired so much excitement in my world. I guess I just don’t like it when things I still associate with my childhood get changed over, even if its only a name.

It probably means I’m afraid of getting older.

Canadian artist Cesar Saez plans to float a giant helium-filled banana over Texas in 2008. It will launch from somewhere in Mexico and float north and do loops over Texas. The article quotes the project’s website:

“In the land of dreamers and the ones with faith, a banana appearing in the Texas sky might seem like a message. As a signal.”

“It is in Texas because it has oil and a lot of Wal-Marts, Exxons and Halliburtons (and the Ranch). It is a buffoon act, trying to impress. … Texan dominant Aerospace and all the Gun Clubs.”

Makes perfect sense to me.

New stun guns for the general public have been unveiled by the Taser company. They come in a variety of colors, so you can get one to match your iPod nano, I guess.

Or, Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon. Like the one witnessed by numerous United Airlines workers in the skies over Chicago’s O’Hare airport in November. That old “UFO” label is hopelessly out-dated. Didn’t you know?

Now, I do believe in the likely existence of extra-terrestrial life, and there may well be life forms out there more advanced than those on Earth, but a being capable of traveling the vast distances of space and hovering over airports is much less likely, and to even consider such a thing would require (for me at least) some very strong supporting evidence. So far, I’m afraid there is none. I want there to be, but that just isn’t enough.

Did you forget our furry friends when making your holiday purchases this year? You can atone for that grievous oversight by bringing toys on your next visit to the National Zoo. Or you can donate money so that the needed gifts can be purchased. But hurry! Goats grow restless without their Jolly balls!

The ancient stones attracted the usual Winter Solstice celebrants this year, though many of the poor dears showed up on the wrong day. Curse it, I’m happy for them anyway.

What is more interesting (to me at least) is that Stonehenge is one of the nominees in the campaign to select the new seven wonders of the world. The lucky seven are to be chosen by poll. You can read all about it and vote here.

Why do I feel this is just a ploy to collect personal information and sell stuff?
